JA Adofo: Why I Tried to Stop My Son from Becoming a Musician
Highlife legend Obuoba JA Adofo has opened up about his initial resistance to his son’s musical career, citing the spiritual dangers he believed plagued the industry during his prime.
In a candid interview with Nayas, the veteran musician revealed that he had hoped his son, Rubean Adofo (Adofo Jnr), would pursue a career in computer engineering instead. Despite enrolling him in a technology programme, Adofo Jnr remained steadfast in his desire to follow the family’s musical path.
“I told him I couldn’t allow it because, during my prime, there was a lot of juju in the music industry. If you weren’t careful, someone could destroy your life,” Adofo shared.
His fears were rooted in the intense rivalries and alleged spiritual attacks he witnessed throughout his career, which he believes led to the untimely deaths of several colleagues. However, Adofo Jnr eventually proved his worth by stepping in to lead the City Boys Band International when it faced collapse, preserving the family’s legendary status.
Today, JA Adofo proudly acknowledges his son as the one who saved the band’s legacy, ensuring that one of Ghana’s most iconic highlife groups continues to thrive for a new generation.
